Joint Pain Worse in Cold?

 

cold weatherThe weather is changing, I can feel it in my bones”. Most of us have heard this old wives tale but is there any truth in it? Research has shown that the refreshing change in weather during autumn can actually bring about aches and pains associated with lower temperatures and changes in barometric air pressure.
Typically this affects people with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other arthritic conditions. Most commonly it effects load bearing joints such as the hips and knees, also the shoulders, elbows and hands. It is thought that sensory nerve endings in joints called baroreceptors respond to slight changes in atmospheric pressure. When the barometric pressure changes the amount of fluid in a joint or the pressure inside a joint can fluctuate which stimulates these receptors causing pain. In an arthritic joint these slight changes can have a greater impact as there is less cartilage to provide cushioning. In lower pressures inflammation around joints can also potentially worsen, this will also put pressure on the nerves again causing pain.
Steps can be taken to reduce inflammation such as applying hot and cold therapy to the affected area, taking a swim in a nice warm pool could also be beneficial. Osteopaths can use techniques designed to help improve blood circulation to the area and reduce inflammation as well as working directly on muscles and joints to help improve mobility.
Cold weather can also have an impact on our muscles, as the temperature drops there is a decrease in blood supply to our muscles causing them to tighten up. As a muscle tightens up it becomes shorter in length reducing our range of movement, these tightened muscles then become more susceptible to injury. A ‘pulled’ muscle occurs when it is lengthened beyond its comfort zone, micro tears occur within the muscle fibres and sometime the ligaments. This can lead to pain, inflammation and sometimes swelling and redness. Muscle spasm causing a further reduction in range of movement is also very common. Extra care should be taken during the colder months when exercising outdoors to ensure you are properly ‘warmed up’ before exercise.
Osteopaths often see these types of muscular aches, pains and strains especially during the colder months. An initial assessment will need to be made and often these complaints can be treated using manual therapy, careful advice and specific exercises.

Adductor muscle and hip flexor strains are a common cause of groin pain, these are the muscles which attach at the top of you thigh and around your pelvis. Injury to these is common in sports where there may be sudden changes of direction or repetitive kicking movements. Pain can be very acute and is usually well localised to the area. Recurrent adductor and hip flexor strains are common for a number of reasons, its therefore important to carefully analyse why someone developed the initial injury, this often involves looking at biomechanics and running technique.

Bursa in the hip can sometimes become inflamed (bursitis). Bursae are little fluid filled sacs which act as a cushion between tendons and bones. Hip bursae can become inflamed with repetitive hip movement or trauma to the area. Bursitis usually causes pain and localised swelling and tenderness.

The tissue around the hip joint called the labrum can become torn, this may be due extrinsic factors such as trauma to the hip, excessive loading or repetitive activity both active (dancing, martial arts) and passive (cycling, driving for long periods) and intrinsic factors such as poor postural tone and abnormalities in the hip joint. Pain is usually dull and ‘nagging’ and often accompanied by ‘clicking’ or ‘catching’ sensation in the hip.

After taking a case history from you, your Osteopath will perform a series of simple test to gain a complete picture of which structure/s have been injured and then provide appropriate treatment and management. Treatment usually consistis of manual therapy, advice and exercise rehabilitation.

Hip and groin pain can sometimes be a symptom of a serious underlying medial condition. All osteopaths are trained to screen for this as part of their examination and will refer you to a medical professional if necessary.

Hip Pain

There are a number or reasons for hip pain some of which can be helped by visiting an osteopath.

Pain can come from a tight, strained or overused muscle in the hip or from the joint itself. Pain in the hip can sometimes be the result of an injury, it can be referred from the back or related to the way you move, stand and/or use your hip.

Pain from osteoarthritis or wear and tear in the hip joint is also common. Osteopaths can’t cure the arthritis and it depends on the severity of the wear and tear but treatment and advice from an osteopath can often help ease the symptoms. Osteopaths can look at the patient as a whole, assess the way the hip moves, strengthen and stretch the muscles, gently massage the hip muscles and stretch the hip joint to reduce tension and improve the mobility of the joint and work on the secondary problems like backache.

X-rays, scans and other tests are sometimes required to make a diagnosis and your osteopath may refer to your GP or a specialist for any additional investigations or treatment.
