Osteopathy for Babies – 5 things you should know.
1. TREATMENT IS EXTREMELY GENTLE
There are a number of gentle osteopathic techniques which can restore normal movement in areas of tension in the body. Cranial osteopathy can be used when other osteopathic techniques are not appropriate because it is so gentle.
2. OSTEOPATHS DON’T JUST TREAT BABIES’ HEADS
Osteopathy can improve movement through the joints and release tension through muscles anywhere in the body. Osteopathy for babies often treats tension in the neck, pelvis, diaphragm and spine because these are areas commonly affected by difficult births.
3. IT CAN HELP WITH A NUMBER OF ISSUES
When carrying out osteopathy for babies we do not treat symptoms and conditions. Instead we look at the way your body works and try to make it work more effectively. For example, we do not treat asthma and we do not claim to cure asthma. What we do is look at the way the diaphragm, ribs and intercostal muscles are working. By improving the way they move, we may in turn improve the way you breath and reduce the effects that asthma has on your posture over time.
4. BABIES CAN BE TENSE TOO
It is normal for a new-born baby to have areas of tension in their body. This is because of the position they were in in the womb and the effects of the birth. Osteopaths assess your baby’s movements and by treating areas of tension may help your baby to be more comfortable and to relax more easily. If your baby is more comfortable he/she may feed, sleep and digest more easily.
5. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE
The mantra of osteopaths the world over is to ‘find it, fix it and leave it alone’. We will aim to treat in as few sessions as possible so that you can enjoy your time with your baby. For many patients this may mean only one or two sessions.
